Air Chathams – Kina takeover

Air Chathams is famous for its in-flight catering. Foodies and chocolate-lovers in particular consistently rate its all-Tim Tam menu as among the world’s best airborne dining experiences.

This April we decided to change it up a little, by adding Chatham Islands Kina (sea urchin) to the menu.

Sloppy, salty kina is best enjoyed raw - straight from the shell. Flight safety regulations however meant handing spiny sea urchins to passengers wouldn’t fly, so we instead created a custom Air Chathams shot glass, just enough for a mouthful of sloppy urchin innards. Yum!

To promote the menu change we sent temperature-controlled sampling packs to New Zealand’s top radio stations along with an offer that any morning hosts trying them on air could shoot out to the Chats on us.

It worked! The menu change received extensive nationwide radio coverage, with more content to come as the hosts take up the offer of a trip to the Chatham Islands.
